Both micro processor and micro controllers are clocked based circuits and a crystal oscillators are used .

Now the question arises why only a crystal oscillators are used?why not multivibrators?

 The answer to this  question is very simple due to a lot of heat dissipation any circuit constituting transistor will show a temperature drift  and the frequency will vary with temperature to maintain a fixed frequency a crystal oscillator is used
